I just got back from Seoul and Bangkok and have a little news to report. This ought to supplement what exists in IGC's and Randy's various international access information. Thailand: Public internet access is as new as January 1, 1995 in Bangkok. Previously, as you know, the Asian Institute of Technology at Thammaset University was offering some service. Now there are two new commercial providers that are very reasonable. There are two commercial internet providers in Thailand at this time. ThaiSarn is being swallowed up by Internet Thailand Company, which is housed within the NECTEC offices for the first year. NECTEC appears to be the government telecommunications folks. Public service is available from March 1, 1995. It caters primarily to corporate users. The rates are as follows: Homenet 400 baht per month ($16) e-mail and usenet news, software, 15 hours a month, 600 kb disk space, 400 incoming/outgoing messages. Worldnet: 600 baht per month - telnetting and ftp added on, login time 20 hours, 1 meg disk space, 600 incomingoutgoing messages. BizNet: 800 baht per month - 40 hours login time and 2 megs disk space, 800 incoming/outgoing messages. There are other options, too, gradually more expensive. We can reach them at user@nectec.or.th or 248-7791, 248-7792, fax: 247- 7775. The other, better system, is COMNET KSC. I talked to people from both systems on the phone, and definitely would choose KSC. Nectec was fine, but slightly more bureaucratic, and not very willing to help me figure out how to get access to the internet during my stay. "Jom" at KSC was very helpful, called me back at the hotel, offered to let me use his personal account to telnet, etc. I think rates are roughly the same. I know that PER pays 600 baht per month, and that we can telnet from their account. For info on their system, we can e-mail any of these: management@comnet.ksc.net.th, admin@... sales@... helpdesk@.... service@.... The Asian Institute of Technology also has full internet access, but I gather it is strictly academic. (This is the system listed in IGC's conference).
