Actually there are three main services in Uruguay: ADINET (online since 1995) ------ ADINET (ANTEL Telephone Company) have the following rates (just Mail and PPP, they don't run a BBS,news, or any other service). Monthly fee: $5 Charge p/hour: $4.5 between 7am and 10pm. $1.1 between 10pm and 7am. They also are selling 64K leased lines at $5500 per month. ADINET serves the commercial area. You can see a more complete detail on their www server: www.antel.com.uy SECIU (online since 1989) ----- SECIU (Universidad de la Republica) don't offer public access. SECIU is the root domain for .uy and gives leased line connections only for the academic area. You can see more info about seciu on: gopher.makenda.edu.uy www.seciu.edu.uy CHASQUE (online since 1989) ------- CHASQUE (Third World Institute and APC Networks) is the uruguayan node of APC and give their users interactive and ppp/slip access to all the Internet services. Chasque is a non profit service. See more info about us at: gopher.item.org.uy www.chasque.apc.org The topology of the uruguayan network is: ----------------------------------------- ADINET to Internet through MCI: 2Mbits ADINET to Internet through Sprint: 256Kbit (backup) SECIU to ADINET: 64K (very soon: 256K) CHASQUE to ADINET: 64K (256K this year) Because recently ANTEL allows any company to provide Internet Services (ANTEL have the monopoly of the communications in Uruguay) we expect the Internet in Uruguay will be grow very fast. I think that this year we will have at least 4 or 5 new ISP in the market. Some BBS whom are doing uucp with us are preparing to have a leased line with ADINET.
