Most towns above 500 people have IDD & X25 services, and 60% of lines are served by digital exchanges. International traffic represents 45% of ANTEL's income. There are cellular telephones in Montevideo and Punta del Este, operated by a private Argentinian contractor. NETWORK CONNECTIONS Uruguay has no direct Internet connection, so you cannot "ping" any Uruguayan host. There is a project to connect the local University to the the University of Porto Alegre via a dedicated SLIP line, but there have been no official announcements. It is just as possible that the same is attempted from Buenos Aires, although the present bandwidth available from atina.ar would not allow any spare. Almost certainly all connections to and from Uruguay are either UUCP over voice lines or over X25. Many people use the URUPAC (PSDN) to access remote machines, mainly via some service providers who have agents in Uruguay (such as Delphi or ATT). To my knowledge there is no longer a Fido node in Uruguay receiving Fido traffic from outside, although one or two isolated Fido boards do operate. chasque.apc.org is working with some fido enthusiasts to provide a channel via rfmail on their Unix system. PSDN: URUPAC -------------------------------------------- Operated by ANTEL. (DNIC 7482) The software and hardware providing this service was developed locally by a private company INTERFASE who also designed the telex system in the early 80's. It provides normal X25 connectivity and a variety of other services: data to telex and fax, and rudimentary Email (one can drop an ASCII file into a users NUI, who gets notified when logging in). There is a public access NUI where foreign network users can drop email into local users' NUIs. Access numbers of interest are: 7482121 Public access "maildrop" box 7482116 General information and user list. Seciu itself operates a Sun 4 machine and polls both uunet.uu.net and dcfcen.edu.ar three times a day. They provide feeds to non- university hosts for a fee and administer the uy domain.
