Workshop Goals

  • Train university network engineering staff on best practices for operation of campus networks
  • Improve technical skills with university network personnel in operating their physical networks
  • Strengthen the LEARN technical community (human network) in developing LEARN's cyberinfrastructure
  • Learn how to use open source software to monitor availability and performance in your campus network.
  • Learn about network security fundamentals and practices
  • Develop a design methodology to facilitate successful participation in national and regional Research and Education Networks.


  • Some Linux or UNIX command line experience.
  • Knowledge of Layer 2 and layer 3 Network basics (IP).

Required Equipment

  • Participants must bring their own Ethernet or WiFi-capable laptops with an OS (Windows, Linux/UNIX, MacOS, etc.) capable of running an SSH client and a web browser.
