Uninet currently has 52 acadmic and research sites connected via a 256 Kbps backbone, with a 256 Kbps circuit to Sprintlink. These circuits are totally overloaded, and are due for an upgrade to 512 Kbps in January 1996, with the possibility of an upgrade to 2 Mbps in October 1996. By informal arrangement, about 200-odd South African schools forward Internet email via Uninet, and a few have (slow) IP connectivity. Uninet acts as ISP for Mozambique and Namibia, and provides dialup uucp connections for countries as far afield as Ghana.
