From: vincent@cc.und.ac.za (Russell Vincent) Date: Tue, 7 Dec 1993 20:13:03 GMT FAQ: Where to look for information in Uninet ============================================ This document will not tell you about the services offered in Uninet, but should give you some pointers to where to find the information you need. Lists of known FTP, WHOIS, GOPHER, WWW and WAIS servers within Uninet are given at the end of the document. If you have anything to contribute to this list, please send me the information at vincent@cc.und.ac.za. This document is also available for anonymous ftp as: ftp.und.ac.za:/pub/archives/faq-info.txt and is available on the UND gopher and WWW servers. Contents: 1) Internet Services - getting started 2) Finding EMail addresses 3) Finding files 4) Specialised Information 5) Useful networking software 6) Other 1) Introductions to Internet services and how to get started. The Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet ftp.sun.ac.za:pub/misc/papers/big-dummys-guide/bdgtti.txt.gz (Available in other formats too) The Guide to Network Resource Tools (by EARN Association) ftp.und.ac.za:/pub/archives/Network-tools.txt 2) Finding EMail addresses. As in postal mail, to send someone an EMail message, you need to know their address. Finding these addresses is often quite tricky and sometimes even needs a phone call to ask. There are some methods of finding EMail addresses, including whois, finger, netfind, etc. At the end of this document is a list of known whois servers in Uninet. (Note: The info found in whois is by no means a definitive list of EMail addresses at a site, but can act as a pretty good guide) As a last resort, you can send EMail to postmaster@some.domain.name. A fairly up-to-date list of postmasters in S.A. can be found in the file ftp.ru.ac.za:/pub/doc/networks 3) Finding files. Within Uninet, there are a lot of the commonly used files/programs available for anonymous ftp. To find where you can obtain a file, use the UND archie server (archie.und.ac.za). Using an archie client you can use the syntax: archie -h archie.und.ac.za You can also perform archie searches via EMail. Send EMail to archie@und.ac.za with the body of the message containing the single word "help" (without the quotes). NB: This archie server does not use the "official" archie software. It just emulates an archie server to provide results for archie clients. A list of known ftp sites is available at the end of this document. 4) Specialised Information - RFC's (Internet Request For Comments) Available at: ftp.ee.und.ac.za:pub/inet/rfc ftp.sun.ac.za:pub/rfc [ Please send me any specialised information that you have available that could be of general interest. e.g: Weather information or reports 5) Server and Client software for Internet services Check the FAQ for commonly used packages in Uninet Available at: ftp.und.ac.za:/pub/archives/faq-cup.txt 6) Other Other good ways to find information in Uninet are: Gopher: A menu driven interface to documents WWW: Similar to gopher, but using hypertext documents WAIS: Perform a search on a subject. USENET: Post a message to one of the ZA groups which represents what you are looking for the best. e.g: when you are looking for files available via anonymous ftp, post to za.archives. A list of known servers in Uninet is at the end of this document.
